Jewelry is a key component in a lot of outfits you have seen in a movie. The wardrobe department, actors and actresses can use jewelry to turn a plain look into something stunning. In fact, in some cases we’ve heard both the wardrobe and costumers talk about have they have based an entire outfit or look off a piece of the character’s jewelry. Regardless of how a piece of jewelry has ended up in a movie, I am sure that like us when you see a costume piece you either want it or look for options to add a similar piece to your wardrobe. Here is a look at some different types of jewelry that you might want to integrate into your wardrobe and some of the movies where you seen similar styles or pieces that have inspired you.
When it comes to necklaces, there are those that hang and those that sit. More specifically, there are chains and chokers. Chains are usually worn with tops that have a low neckline or perhaps a plain shirt that needs pizzazz. Chokers are used to bring the eye up to the neck and often look best with higher necklines. With chains, you can get big pendants to wear or just something simple like a gold heart. The length of the chain may vary as well. There are countless movies where we have seen some great jewelry pieces that you could wear year after year and not feel out of style. Of course, we always believe our readers do a great job of identifying the jewelry they’ve seen in a movie and letting us know which piece an actress wore in a film are more popular. Take a look at the jewelry pieces in The Devil Wears Prada, the necklace in It’s Complicated and even one jewelry piece that was popular for a while, the necklace worn by Jennifer Garner in Catch and Release.
Of course, then come the bracelets and rings. For rings, most wardrobe departments stay away from adorning a actor or actress in too many at one time. Of course, if you’re Johnny Depp portraying Captain Jack Sparrow then more is more! Bracelets don’t always show up in a movie and aren’t always necessary and oftentimes they are substituted for a pretty watch that is both functional and fashionable. The watch in The Blind Side, as well James Bond's watch and even Harry Connick Jr’s watch in PS I Love You are great places to start if your are thinking of adding a new watch to your wardrobe.
Of course, most film costume designers follow a general rule of thumb to ensure that they do not over-accessorize a character’s look. They compile their sketches, continuity books; review the dailies and work to design a look for the film’s characters that fit. For a costumer it’s easy to see that they can take off one piece of jewelry from an actress and still achieve the look they are going for. Because really, how many films have you seen where the actress really did need to wear a bracelet, four rings, a necklace and earrings all at once? That’s a bit of overkill. Instead, the costume designers lets the jewelry highlight a wardrobe, not overwhelm it. They often find that subtlety is a key to success in completing a movie’s wardrobe and our readers agree as often they have spotted pieces in a film that stood out but not so much so that it overwhelmed a scene, character or the movie.
